    Smoking Cigarette and Vaping effects in Oral Health

    It is easier to say than done to quit smoking for the best healthy teeth and gums, However all meta-analysis shows smoking is harmful to oral health. Smoking effect on oral health smokers are more vulnerable to produce Biofilm which sticks around teeth and cause gums to inflame (Gingivitis) beside the lack of oxygen in the blood stream resulting that the inflamed gums don’t heal leading to worsen the condition to be Periodontitis more quickly than non-smokers. Gum disease is major cause of tooth loss in adults.

    Smokers are at high risk of developing Oral Health Issues Caused by Smoking:

    • teeth stains
    • Bad breath
    • Oral discoloration
    • Taste and smell loss
    • Dry mouth
    • More plaque and tartar accumulation
    • Oral wound healing delay
    • Precancerous lesions initially followed by cancer.

    Dental Considerations:

    Smoking will harm your teeth yet without proper dental care, condition will drop from bad to worse; brushing twice a day, using dental floss is not enough to delay the side effects.

    Here are some tips for you:

    • Visiting dentist 3-4 times a year is crucial to allow dentist to follow up condition closely.
    • Professional dental cleaning is required 3-4 times a year. 
    • Cut down on being obsessed with acidic drinks e.g. coffee, tea, fizzy drinks…etc. this will worsen the condition. Follow carefully your dentist guidance.
