Is Gum Disease Transmissible?

Gum disease also known as periodontal disease in its advanced stages is an infection characterized by inflammation of the gums, which can progress to damage the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth causing tooth loss if left untreated. How does Gum Disease develop? It is primarily caused by the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth and gums. When plaque is not removed through regular brushing and flossing, it can harden into tartar, leading to gum inflammation and infection. Is Gum Disease transmissible? the bacteria responsible in contributing the gums to become infected travels in saliva, thus the capability of transmission from one person to other is possible if being exposed long-term from the saliva and oral fluids of a person with gum disease, through activities like sharing of food and drink, utensils, toothbrush or even kissing without proper hygiene could potentially increase your risk of developing periodontal disease.
