Your baby won’t be expected to sit solo in a giant chair while a bright light shines in their eyes. The first visit is designed to be quick, gentle, and stress-free.
1.The Knee-to-Knee Exam:Minute 1-5.You will sit in the dental chair holding your baby facing you. You will then gently lower the baby’s head back onto the dentist’s lap while you hold their hands. This lets the baby look right up at you while the dentist looks inside.
2.The Quick Peek:Minute 5-10.The dentist will use a small mirror or just a gloved finger to count the teeth, check the health of the gums, and look for any early signs of plaque buildup or decay.
3.Glow-up & Protect:Minute 10-15.If necessary, the dentist might gently wipe the teeth with a damp cloth or soft toothbrush. In some cases, a mild fluoride varnish might be painted on to strengthen the enamel.
Early visits are less about deep cleaning and more about prevention and education.
Preventing “Baby Bottle” Cavities: As soon as teeth emerge, they can get cavities. Liquid from milk, formula, or juice can pool around a baby’s teeth, leading to early childhood caries (tooth decay).
Checking Development: The dentist will ensure your baby’s jaws, gums, and emerging teeth are growing correctly, checking for issues like tongue-ties that could affect feeding or speech.
Building Comfort: A dental office can be intimidating. Bringing them in before they develop stranger anxiety helps normalize the sights, sounds, and friendly faces of the clinic.
Parent Coaching: You will get expert advice on how to clean tiny teeth, handle teething discomfort, handle pacifier habits, and navigate nighttime feedings safely.
Dental Considerations;
You don’t have to wait for the dentist to start practicing good oral hygiene. Here is a quick reference guide for daily care:
Before Teeth Erupt –Wipe gums twice a day with a clean, damp washcloth after feedings
First Tooth Appears-Switch to a baby toothbrush with soft bristles. Use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice).
Bedtime Routine-Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. If they need a bottle to sleep, fill it only with water.
