    Good and Bad Food for your Teeth and Gums

    Our mouth is our body’s main point of access of nutrients we consume, be watchful of what you are eating because it affects not only your general health but your dental health as well. Several foods can give tooth decay, on the other hand other food helps fight plaque and cavity buildup. Aside from properly brushing at least 2 times a day with fluoride toothpaste and visiting your dentist regularly, you can lessen the possibility of having plaque and cavities by avoiding or limiting yourself from consuming bad food and increase ingestion of good food for your teeth and gums. Here are some foods to seek out and some to stay away from.

    Good Food:

    High Calcium Food- Cheese, milk, plain yogurt, calcium fortified tofu, leafy green vegetables and almonds.

    Protein rich food-Meat, poultry, fish and eggs best source of phosphorus.

    High Fiber Food-Fruits and vegetables that contains Vitamin C and Vitamin A.

    Bad Food:

    Hard and Sticky Food- Lollipops and candies, dried fruits.

    Sugar stuffed Food- Cakes, cookies and muffins.

    Beverage containing sugar- Soda, Lemonade, sweetened juice, tea and coffee (hot/cold)

    Acidic and citrus food- Vinegar, Orange, lemon, coffee, etc. which can dissolve tooth enamel.

    Dental Considerations:

    Drink more water since it has fluoride which helps fight tooth decay, limit snacking non-nutritious foods and drinks. Avoid smoking, try to drink or gargle your mouth with water after finishing bad food or drink, brush twice a day, floss in between your teeth once a day and visit your dentist on a regular basis.
