When we are sick our top priority is to regain our health by taking care of our body. However during this period it is also important to pay attention of our oral health. Here are several ways to maintain oral health during sickness period according to American Dental Association.
Practice Good Oral Hygiene- Don’t share your toothbrush to anyone especially when you are sick. Also you may replace your toothbrush after you’ve been sick just to make sure you’re not compromising your health.
Rinse your mouth after vomiting- Don’t brush your teeth right after you vomit, stomach acid comes into contact with your teeth and if you brush you’ll just rubbing the acid all over your teeth. It is better to rinse your mouth with at least water to help wash away acids and brush after 30 minutes.
Select right fluid- Staying hydrated during sickness is very essential, so keep in mind that water is the healthiest fluid to replenish your body.
Opt for sugar free cough drops- When choosing medicine particularly for cough, avoid ingredients with has fructose or corn syrup in it. As these sugary ingredients leads to bacterial build up the more it stays in your mouth which eventually produces acids that causes cavity on your teeth.
Stay Hydrated- one of the reason is to avoid dry mouth which may lead to a greater risk of having cavities. To prevent dry mouth drink plenty of water and suck on sugarless candies or lozenges to keep saliva flowing.
Maintain our Overall health and Oral Health all year round. Be conscious of what you are eating and drinking. As much as possible try to avoid something that is sugary sticky and too acidic, or else rinse your mouth with water right after consuming these and wait for at least 30 minutes before you brush your teeth and drink right amount of water.
